Further processing plants, from concept to commissioning

A further processing plant turns raw material into sausages, cooked and smoked products, ham and bacon, and value-added convenience foods. Its performance is decided long before the first line runs: by how process engineering, hygienic facility design, refrigeration, utilities, automation, packaging and logistics are brought together into one production environment.

INTERCOOL delivers further processing facilities as complete Engineering, Procurement & Construction (EPC) projects, from concept to commissioning. The same EPC approach also covers fresh retail and canning & retort facilities.

Food safety engineered into the layout

In a further processing plant, food safety starts with the layout. These are the principles we engineer into every facility:

  • Raw and cooked product segregation: raw and cooked products are separated in the layout.
  • Hygienic zoning concepts: the facility is planned as hygienic zones. More on hygienic zoning.
  • Personnel flow control: people move from outside through corridors, change rooms and hygiene zones before they reach production.
  • Ingredient logistics management: ingredient flows are part of the layout.
  • Packaging control systems: packaging is controlled as part of the hygiene concept.
  • Equipment sanitation strategy: a sanitation strategy for the equipment is part of the design.

Process technologies, matched to your product portfolio

The process technology follows from the products you want to make — sausages, cooked and smoked products, ham and bacon, or value-added convenience foods. The technologies we integrate in further processing facilities:

  • Preparation: grinding and mixing.
  • Treatment: tumbling and injection.
  • Forming: stuffing.
  • Heat treatment: cooking and smoking.
  • Finishing: packaging and freezing.

INTERCOOL does not manufacture equipment. Solutions for red meat, poultry, fish and other food products are developed together with trusted specialist suppliers worldwide, with the focus on the right combination of design, process technology and material selection. How these technologies shape the building around them: further processing technologies. Frozen output can be stored in a cold store planned in the same project.

What a complete project covers

  • Concept & feasibility: capacity studies, business case development, product portfolio evaluation, and master planning with site layouts.
  • Process engineering: further processing technologies and packaging integration, laid out as one production flow.
  • Buildings & infrastructure: hygienic food facility design, insulated wall and ceiling systems, production and packaging rooms, and layouts ready for expansion.
  • Utilities & process support: refrigeration systems, steam and hot water generation, compressed air, water treatment, and electrical and automation systems. How process utilities are designed for a meat plant.

Refrigeration is specified, tendered, reviewed and commissioned by INTERCOOL as part of the project; the detailed refrigeration design is carried out by the specialist refrigeration partner.

What the plant is designed to deliver

Every facility is engineered around products, process flow, food safety, utilities, logistics and future expansion requirements. The aim is a plant that delivers on four points:

  • Product quality: consistent production environments and optimised process controls.
  • Higher yields: reduced losses and better raw material utilisation.
  • Lower operating costs: energy-efficient facility design and an optimised production flow.
  • Future flexibility: designed for growth, automation and product diversification.

Start with your product portfolio. Tell us which products you want to make, in what volumes and on which site — that is enough for a first concept.

How a further processing project runs

PhaseWhat happens
DefineProducts, capacity and site: the product portfolio, volumes and the business case that set the plant’s size
EngineerProcess, building and utilities: the production flow, hygienic zoning and raw/cooked segregation, rooms and utility systems
ProcureSpecialists’ systems selected for each process step, from processing lines to packaging
ConstructCoordinated site execution across process, building and utility disciplines
CommissionTest, optimise and hand over a plant ready for production

The objective is robust throughput, consistent ingredient quality, safe operation and a practical path from raw-material reception to high-value products. Further processing can be delivered as part of a complete plant under an EPC turnkey contract.

Frequently asked questions

What is included in a turnkey further processing plant?

Concept and feasibility, process engineering, the building and its infrastructure, utilities and process support, procurement, construction and commissioning — delivered as one EPC project.

Can you add further processing lines to an existing plant?

Yes. Projects range from extensions with new sausage lines and smoking facilities to project management of new further processing lines in an operating plant.

Which products can the plant be designed for?

Sausages, cooked and smoked products, ham and bacon, and value-added convenience foods, for red meat, poultry, fish and other food products.

Do you supply the processing machines?

No. INTERCOOL is supplier-independent: the systems for each process step come from trusted specialist suppliers and technology partners, selected for the project.

How do you keep raw and cooked products apart?

Through the layout: raw and cooked product segregation, hygienic zoning and personnel flow control are designed into the facility from the engineering phase.

What information gets a first concept started?

Your products, the capacity you need and your site.
